CASALGUIDI STUMPWORK |

It should not be surprising that a nation rich with the history of whitework embroideries would produce, if even for a short time, a type of stumpwork so unique and dramatic that it exists in a category unto itself. Such is the case with Casalguidi Embroidery which flourished in the villages outside of Florence between 1850 and WWI.
Special to Casalguidi is a background worked in Four-Sided Stitch on top of which are situated various high-profile surface stitches: bullion knots, Casalguidi Stem, Palestrina Knots, dimensional weaving, etc. Hems are very decorative as are insertion stitches to join edges, tassels, bobbles, loops, cords, covered rings, etc. Traditionally, materials were off-white in color - texture was the goal. With the recent revival of this beautiful artform, it is not uncommon to see lovely colors and fibers brought together. Traditionally, Casalguidi bags, pillows, table covers were part of a young Victorian lady's dowry.
