| PETIT POINT TIPS | ||

Ample light and magnification is a must! When stitching petit point it would be helpful to place a dark piece of fabric on your lap. This will help you to see the silk gauze better. Starting and ending the thread is the same as cross stitch or needlepoint. Weave the thread under other threads on the back side of your work. Never knot the thread, this leaves bumps on the front of your work. The two needles that work the best are the Tapestry Petit 28 or the Sewing 10. For larger projects it is best to tack the silk gauze to a square wooden frame. The silk will need to be basted or taped on the edges. For smaller projects the silk gauze can be taped to a piece of mat board(center cut out). Hairdressers' tape works well to stick it to the mat board. Silk gauze stretches very little and does not fray like linen and other fabrics. The holes between the fibers makes it very easy to see your hand on the back side, for your next stitch. It is hard to split the fibers of silk gauze. It is expensive, but in most cases you don't need very much. This acutally makes it cheaper than linen. Any pattern can be completed on silk gauze, as one over one. Beware of two many half stitches or quarter stitches. With one over one, it is not possible to make half or quarter stitches. Adapting a pattern may require some changes in the pattern. When you are ready to frame the work, place it on top of a piece of solid fabric, such as quilting fabric. White works best. The white will hide the silk gauze fibers making the background look solid. If you used black silk gauze, black works best.
