Joanna Carter was credited for creating Mountmellick Embroidery. Records indicate that she was a member of the Church of Ireland, Protestant. At the London Exhibition of 1816, Joanna received an award for developing new embroidery stitches. By 1825 She owned a small thatched cottage school of 15 girls. The school was 1/2 Church of Ireland and 1/2 Catholics. Her annual income was a mere £9. per year. Records show that she entered the Irish Industrial Exhibition of 1853. Joanna was refered to as "Carter, J. Mountmellick, Queen's Country, Designer and Manufacturer, embroidered quilt, toilet cover and doileys." The Countess of Eglinton displayed a "richly embroidered quilt" that was designed and stitched by Joanna.
