			ELENA IOVE OF ELENA’S NEEDLEARTS
			I am originally from Romania and have been living in Canada, B.C., Vancouver/Lower Mainland for 18 years with my husband and daughter who is 31, married and has a 3 year old daughter but lives in WA state. Romanian Point Lace is my hobby for more than 35 years but I learned to knit, crochet and other type of needle embroidery since I was 6-7 years of age, from my grandmother and mother. In school, from grade 3rd to 7th we had a class of needlecraft every week and each trimester we had to present a finished project . Later on I learned cross stitch and needlepoint. I learned Romanian Point Lace from a neighbor of mine who moved from city of Oradea, Transilvania, the West part of Romania to our town, close to the beautiful beaches at the Black Sea, which is in the East part of Romania. Then, from 1969-1973 as a substitute teacher I had to organize needleart workshops with the students and now it was time for me to teach them, mostly the girls, what I learned from my mother, grandmother and my neighbor. I taught them knitting, crochet, needle embroidery and Romanian Point Lace - how to make the braid, baste it down on the fabric pattern, join the braids where they touch and start with simple needle filling stitches. Ever since I learned this very old and beautiful lace technique I collected as many stitches and braids as possible and I made more than 100 pieces which include: doilies, coasters, Christmas Ornaments and recently, bookmarks, butterflies, collars, inserts, appliques, sea shells etc. Some of the designs I brought with me from Romania(from a couple of books) have been modified and improved. Soon after I started making my first kits, my daughter suggested to me, to make some Christmas decorations, then I thought of appliques, inserts, collars and later I designed bookmarks, butterflies and my latest designs are 4 sea shells, only 3 of them featured on the cover page of the Canadian Lacemaker Gazette, summer issue. Right now I have a bird and a turtle in work and many other projects in work. I get my inspiration from decorative books, fabric prints, my granddaughter’s books, stickers etc. In fall of 1995 I participated in a Market project at the Metrotown Lewiscraft store and I made some doilies and coasters for sale. People were very interested and intrigued by the new(to them) and gorgeous lace technique. Many advised me to write a book and since then I never stopped thinking about it. I started working on my first Romanian Point Lace book this year and I hope to have it ready and out by spring/summer of 1996. In fall of 1999 I taught a Christmas Angel to a small class at Heirloom Needlearts shop in Surrey, now closed. In fall/winter season of 2003 I taught the Christmas Bell to a class of 18 students at a chapter of Needlepoint Guild of America in Richmond, B.C. Right now, with Tess Frost of Fireside Needlecraft Designs we are organizing some workshops in the Vancouver/Lower Mainland to teach this lace technique. I am also doing some one on one teaching and trying to organize more classes for RPL teaching. I hope to have the chance to teach this beautiful lace technique all across Canada. I am selling my designs in kits and patterns to stores across Canada.
